Curtain walling and cladding are the two words most often mixed up on a Dubai facade. From the street they can look related, but they do genuinely different jobs — and knowing which is which helps you read a facade design and a quote properly.

What curtain walling is

Curtain walling is a glazed aluminium framework that forms the outer wall of a building. It hangs off the structure like a curtain, carries its own weight and the wind load, and is mostly glass. It is what gives towers and villas their full-height glazed elevations. Its whole discipline is holding an even line across a large area while the building moves and the temperature swings.

Stick vs unitised

Curtain walling is built one of two ways. Stick systems are assembled piece by piece on site; unitised systems arrive as pre-made panels and go up faster with tighter factory tolerances. Height, programme and access decide which suits a project — tall towers usually favour unitised.

What cladding is

Cladding is a rainscreen skin fixed over a wall that already exists, to shed water and give a finished face. In aluminium that usually means composite (ACP) or solid panel, with concealed fixings and carefully held joint widths. It is not the wall — it covers a wall. Where curtain walling is largely glass, cladding is largely solid panel.

They work together

Most real buildings use both: glazed curtain walling where you want light and a view, solid cladding where you want a finished opaque face, coordinated so the lines and joints carry through between them. That junction — glass meeting panel — is where a facade is made or let down, which is why it helps to have the aluminium, the cladding and the glass under one contractor.
